THE compensation bill for a solitaire diamond ring lost by an unemployed man after he snatched it from a Charlestown jewellery store was increased yesterday from $19,500 to $24,087.
A valuation certificate for the amended sum was submitted when a nine-month home detention order with a two-month non-parole period was confirmed for Zak John Brady in Newcastle Court.Brady, 19, of Drysdale Crescent, Metford, pleaded guilty to stealing the yellow gold engagement ring from Michael Hill Jewellers.Senior Constable Leigh Gardiner said in a tendered statement that Brady entered the shop on the afternoon of September 1 last year to say, "I am looking for an engagement ring".He left after being shown one for $5000, but returned about 10 minutes later. As the assistant was holding another ring between his fingers, Brady snatched it and ran from the store.Senior Constable Gardiner said the assistant chased Brady into Marie Street but lost sight of him.Brady, who surrendered to Maitland police on September 10, said he dropped the ring when he fell over a fence during his getaway.
